(Made for 7DRL 2023. Greatly enhanced post-7DRL version is available for download.)

"Newly anointed acolyte: You have pledged, before our Eternal Guide, the contracts that bind you. And now, your mission: to descend, below the temple, to purge it of the corruption lurking within. Go with guidance, and uphold your Oath."

Acolyte's Pledge is a traditional-style roguelike. It's a turn-based dungeon crawl into the depths of a long-forgotten temple to discover what dwells beneath. Along the way, you'll have to face and survive a host of creatures, some hostile, some not.

You play as an acolyte, the lowest level of paladin, empowered by your deity with the strength to vanquish the unholy and restore peace to the world. At least, that's what you believed, when you took up your Oath.

Each run in Acolyte's Pledge, you will have take a slightly different Oath, granting you a boon from the divine. But if your faith weakens and you violate that oath, or break it entirely, that boon, and your deity's favor, will be lost. And soon after, perhaps you will be too.

(Windows 7DRL Users: There's something weird going on with the window sizing, so it could become absurdly full-screen. To quit, you can press F12.)

Post - 7DRL Changes

  • Version number is displayed on main screen (after fade-in)
  • Zombies move slower now (because zombies should shamble)
  • Statues could block corridors, halting game progression. This is no longer the case.
  • Typo in some story text.
  • Added the "get item" instruction to the help screen.
  • The "Quietus" oath didn't work correctly, and that's fixed now.
  • When you are killed, you can still view your log and inventory and character info, to review your progress.
  • Tiny visual flair - The health-bar will animate it's change in value now.
  • [Spoiler] is slightly modified
  • Version 0.0.8.1 and beyond has hot-swappable graphics. Press TAB to switch between tiles and ASCII.
  • Version 0.0.8.3 adds an "Interact" key, which is context-sensitive for coup-de-grace, picking up items and descending to the next floor. This makes it much easier to play with directional keys and "one button".

Gameplay video of your game.

The game felt nice and the aesthetics are gorgeous, even down to the music. I didn't know what I was doing for a fair amount of it, and definitely felt bad always breaking my vows, particularly because I didn't know how to avoid it.

I also just always got wrecked by the first boss, so I'm probably doing something wrong.

Can't help the feeling that I'm missing quite a bit because it seems nicely crafted but I got stuck a little.

Thanks for playing! There’s some element of luck to the game currently because character progression is currently dependent on your equipment, so you might get all the way to the end without the right tools to defeat the boss.

It’s something I’d like to improve when I get a chance.

I go back and forth with the oaths because I want there to be some mystery there for the player to solve, but I also don’t want folks getting so frustrated that they quit all together because their oaths break. I’ll consider how best to handle that.

I like the current oath situation as one of some mystery. It seems like the game is telling me that I should try to not hit anything until the final boss if possible, which just seems pretty tricky!

It depends on which oaths you get I suppose. The game doesn’t necessarily give enough tools right now for all of them to be unbroken by the end. It’s partially an experiment in human behaviour XD

On Win x64, this actually didn't display my windows properly (UI was completely off screen except for the last little bit of text. That being said, your art style is very cool.

~~Oh that’s interesting, could you post a screenshot? This sounds like an engine bug I need to investigate.~~

I’ve attempted a fix for this, hopefully it looks better.

I should've thrown one in with the previous post, my bad. I'll post if I get back to it later today!

That’s fine, I know what the issue is now and there’s a workaround implemented, it’s just a little ugly.
